Two liters of water in a bottle that weighs 1.3 ounces is the whole argument, and it holds up whether you are loading a week's pack or stuffing a daypack for a few hours on the water. Empty, the Platy rolls down to about the size of a folded map. Full, it shrinks as you drink, so the room it takes in a pack tracks exactly how much water is left. We also liked that a full one stands on a flat rock while you work the cap off with one hand, which is not a given with a soft bottle.
Compatibility is where it quietly earns its keep. It takes Platypus caps and drink tubes, and it threads onto the GravityWorks filter system, so the bag that went in empty comes back full of filtered water. For the least expensive bottle in this group, that is a lot of usefulness.
Expect a multi-season bottle rather than a forever one. A thin film gives out at a hard crease eventually, and the bottom seam is the usual spot, so ours lives rolled loosely in a dry bag instead of pressed flat in a pack. The screw cap is the other soft spot: cross-thread it in a hurry at a stream and it weeps into your gear, so seat it square and give it a look before it goes back in the bag.
Two liters is also more bottle than some days need. Half full, it is a floppy bag that wants a hand while you drink. We still take it over a hard bottle for air travel, where the alternative is carrying an empty cylinder through two airports.
Pros
- Two liters in a 1.3-ounce bottle
- Rolls into a pocket and shrinks as you drink
- Stands upright when full
- Takes Platypus caps, drink tubes, and GravityWorks filters
Cons
- Narrow mouth takes no ice and dries slowly
- Hand wash only
We tell anyone who wants maximum water for minimum weight to start here: two liters, 1.3 ounces, and a roll into the pocket when it is empty.
