A 150-hook box looks like a lifetime supply until you sort it by size. This one puts 30 hooks each in #1 and 1/0, 20 each in 2/0 through 4/0, and 10 each in 5/0, 6/0, and 8/0. That is a sensible mix for inshore fishing, catfish, and general bait soaking, and it is why this is the circle-hook assortment we recommend first.
The hooks are high-carbon steel with an offset point and a barb, and they come sharp enough to use straight from the box. We like the offset point for bait because it turns into the corner of the mouth on a steady load, and the wire has enough backbone for the fish most people will meet in the surf or a river. The 8/0 gives you a big-bait option at the top of the range.
The mix leans toward the small and mid sizes, so anglers who fish big baits often will go through 5/0 and up before the rest of the box runs out. That is a reasonable trade for a general bait set, and the box is easy to keep in a boat bag. We prefer the extra small hooks for inshore work to a box full of giant circles we rarely tie.
Pros
- Eight sizes cover inshore and catfish baits
- Sharp high-carbon points
- Generous counts in small and mid sizes
- Good value for a full bait box
Cons
- Not a soft-plastic bass hook
If you want one box for catfish, surf, and general bait fishing, this is the circle-hook assortment we recommend first.
