Five-eighths of an ounce is the reason this bait is first in the box. That weight drops fast, keeps a near-vertical line in light current, and gets you back down to the mark before the school slides off. The body does the rest: it darts away on a lift and glides back under the hole on the fall. Walleye under the ice do not chase far — they rise a foot, look, and either eat or don't — and a bait that spends its time swinging away from the hole hands them a decision.
We keep it at the top because it covers both jobs a walleye bait has to do. Short, sharp snaps make it dart and push water; a slow, high lift followed by slack makes it glide out and swing back, which is the look that pulls a mark up off the bottom on a flasher. Chrome Blue is a natural baitfish finish that reads in clear water, and it is what stays tied on when we do not yet know what the lake wants.
What you get for that is one bait, not a box. Per lure it costs more than any kit here, which stings on a lake with wood and rock where you expect to donate a few. In stained water we switch to a rattle spoon, and in shallow weeds a blade bait rips better. As the single lure to start with, nothing else here covers as many situations.
Pros
- 5/8 ounce drops fast and stays vertical
- Dart-and-glide action converts following fish
- Chrome finish reads in clear water
Cons
- One lure per pack, no spare
- Snags when jigged tight to wood or rock
Our default walleye bait through the ice: 5/8 ounce drops fast, glides on the fall, and pulls neutral fish off bottom in unfamiliar water.
