Best Overall
Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 50 Stick
Key details
- SPF
- 50, broad spectrum
- Size
- 1.5 oz
- Water Resistance
- 80 minutes
One and a half ounces is the number that decides this one. That is more than double the sunscreen in any other stick here, and it changes what the stick is for: instead of dabbing a nose and two ears, you can run a stripe down a shin, across a shoulder and around the back of a neck before the boat is off the trailer.
That is why it is our default for anyone whose sun exposure comes in bulk — fishing, swimming, a long beach day, three kids and a truck bed. The label claims broad-spectrum SPF 50 with 80 minutes of water resistance, matching the best of the sticks here, and it goes on clear, so we are not chasing white streaks across somebody else's eyebrows in full sun. Per ounce it is the best value in this guide by a wide margin, which is why we keep one in the boat bag and one in the car.
It stays a body stick, though. For eye corners, ears and the lip line, one of the smaller face sticks below is easier to aim and less likely to end up somewhere it should not.
Pros
- More than double the product of any other stick here
- 80-minute water resistance matches the best here
- Goes on clear with no white cast
- Best value per ounce in this guide
Cons
- Leaves a visible sheen before it settles
Our default for arms, legs and family reapplication: more than double the product of any other stick here, clear on the skin, with 80-minute water resistance and the best value per ounce.
