Every box in this guide needs one bait that fishes weightless, and for us that's the five-inch Senko. Rigged with nothing but a hook, it falls with a slow shimmy that a bass sitting under a dock or a laydown will eat on the way down. There's no retrieve to get right, no trailer to match, nothing to tune.
It also covers more situations than a plain stickbait suggests. Wacky-rigged, it's a finesse bait for clear water; Texas-rigged, it goes into cover; on a Carolina rig or a shaky head it drags the bottom. Green pumpkin with large black flake is the color we reach for first, because it reads as a craw or a baitfish in everything from clear water to a light stain.
The fall is what we watch, not the retrieve. Cast it out, let it drop on a semi-tight line, and the strike usually arrives before you've moved the bait at all. That's also why the Senko rewards patience: reel it in like a worm and you're fishing a different, worse lure.
Ten baits come in a pack, one colorway, five inches long — big enough for a keeper, small enough for a spotted bass. We've never had a day where we regretted tying one on, which is more than we can say for anything else here, and it's the pick we hand a beginner and a tournament angler alike.
Pros
- Fishes weightless, wacky, or Texas-rigged
- Gets bit on the fall
- Green pumpkin black flake suits most water
- Ten baits in every pack
Cons
- Tears after a fish or two
We made the Senko our top pick because it's the one soft bait here that rigs well however you tie it on — and because it gets bit on the drop.
