Bone conduction usually asks you to give up bass in exchange for open ears, and most of the pairs here make that trade quietly. The OpenRun Pro 2 doesn't. Shokz runs a bone-conduction driver alongside a small air-conduction driver, and the low end that arrives is the first we've heard from this category that doesn't sound like a radio playing in the next room. On a bike path with wind in your ears, being able to follow a bass line and a vocal at the same time is what keeps a two-hour session from turning into a chore.
The frame is a nickel-titanium memory wire with hooks that curl behind the ear, and at 30.3 grams it disappears once it's on — we stopped noticing it between sets. Shokz quotes 12 hours of playtime and an hour to recharge, matched by only one other pair here and enough to cover a full day without a battery pack in your pocket. The hard shell case is the other thing we didn't expect to care about and now do; it keeps the band from getting crushed at the bottom of a tackle bag.
Two wind-resistant mics and an AI noise-reduction step handle calls, and on a breezy shoreline the person on the other end heard us rather than the weather. The Shokz app adds EQ modes, including a Classic setting that hands the bass back to the bone driver alone if you prefer the thinner, purer presentation.
It's rated IP55, which covers sweat and rain and stops there. That's the one place this pair gives ground to cheaper sets: it isn't the one for surf or a spray-filled boat, and the OpenRun is what we take on those days.
Pros
- Dedicated bass driver you can actually hear
- 12 hours of playtime, an hour to recharge
- 30.3 g frame that vanishes on the head
- Hard case and reflective stickers included
Cons
- Top of this group's price range
- Mic or power-button faults can end a pair early
If you want one pair for the morning run and the full day outdoors, this is the one we hand people: it's the only set here with a dedicated bass driver, and it runs 12 hours.
